  • Can Prunera

    Address:
Carrer de sa Lluna, 86, 07100 Sóller, Illes Balears, Spain .

Can Prunera Modernist Museum is housed in an old modernist-style mansion built at the beginning of the 20th century. Its sinuous, animalistic, and natural forms combine to welcome visitors, who will tour a museum that has become one of the landmarks of the town of Sóller.

This monumental noble house, with three floors and a basement, was constructed between 1909 and 1911 by Joan Magraner Oliver (also known as Joan Prunera), a Sóller native who became wealthy through his fruit business in France. The building follows the artistic trend of architectural modernism, which was very fashionable in Sóller at the time, with a particular emphasis on French Art Nouveau, reflecting the town’s close ties with France. The architect of the building is not definitively known, but all indications point to Juan Rubió Bellver, who also designed the Banco de Sóller building and the modernist façade of the Sant Bartomeu Parish Church, both located in the Plaça de la Constitució in Sóller. Bellver was a disciple and assistant of Antoni Gaudí when he came to Mallorca to renovate the Palma Cathedral, hence his notable influence on Mallorca’s architectural modernism.
